Catherine W Scott Well Healed PressSome thoughts on Booze at Breakfast

I wrote Booze at Breakfast as tribute to my brother Johnny for his battle to overcome the brutality of his childhood. Al-Anon says “You give it (your program) away so you can keep it” That’s the 12th step. “Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to others, and to practice these all our affairs.” The hero’s journey that just might encourage a fellow traveler.

I thought I was writing to give him his long-overdue and to highlight the sweet freedom of recovery, you know? But hold the phone; that was just the impetus.

An old saying kicking around writing groups is “There is nothing so compelling as a book that demands to be written.”  By you, they didn’t mention, who have written nothing beyond some sophomoric oversharings in a journal since the requirements of college and grad school. Fifty years ago.

Well okay, feels like the next right thing to do. What do I have to lose but a little sleep? And that bloody compelling power that feels like Somebody’s big foot in my back isn’t going to let up.

But here’s the way it played out: The force of a thirty-mile-an-hour wind blew through my yard every early morning writing hour as I squeezed out all those words. I discovered the great seductive secret in creative expression – that it continuously breaks open my heart to mysteries beyond me. And all of a sudden,  there’s a whole flippin’ BOOK!

Something Formless does the writing through me and as me. It’s like plugging into a socket and easing into the flow of the current to let it work its own magic. I become a small vessel, yet somehow larger than me.

It’s a humbling, ordinary thing. We can call it God if that works, but hey. Choose your own and perhaps dance real romantically, or laugh out loud, or smash your glass in joy against the tavern wall with it tonight.
